The New BMW X5 to Feature a Hydrogen Powertrain
One of the most anticipated releases from German automaker BMW is the next generation of its X5 crossover, set to debut in 2026. Alongside updated gasoline, diesel, and plug-in hybrid powertrains, BMW is introducing a groundbreaking hydrogen-powered version.
What We Know About the Upcoming BMW X5
In addition to traditional powertrains, BMW is reportedly launching a hydrogen-powered variant called the iX5, developed in collaboration with Toyota. This hydrogen-powered model is set to expand BMW’s lineup of eco-friendly vehicles, with similar powertrains likely to follow in other models.
BMW began limited production of hydrogen-powered X5s in 2023, building on its decades-long research into the technology that started in the 1970s. Toyota, a leader in hydrogen innovation, has been a key partner in this development since 2013, supplying BMW with fuel cell components.
How Hydrogen Differs from Electric
Unlike battery-electric vehicles, hydrogen-powered cars offer the advantage of fast refueling, typically taking just 3-4 minutes, similar to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. However, the biggest hurdle for hydrogen adoption remains the lack of infrastructure, such as refueling stations.
The iX5’s Power and Performance
The concept version of the iX5 hydrogen SUV boasts impressive specs:
• 401 horsepower output.
• Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in under 6 seconds.
• Two hydrogen tanks provide a range of up to 504 kilometers (313 miles) under the WLTP cycle.
The vehicle’s powertrain combines a hydrogen fuel cell system with a high-performance lithium-ion battery located under the cargo area. The hydrogen fuel cell generates 172 horsepower, while the rest comes from the battery, ensuring smooth and powerful performance.
Advanced Engineering
Interestingly, the hydrogen-powered X5 features a turbocharger and intercooler, technologies traditionally associated with gasoline engines. These components enhance the performance of the fuel cell system, providing a driving experience comparable to conventional ICE vehicles.
